** How the role of the woman has changed throughout Spanish literature and pop culture, and how these changes have affected los Don Juanes over time.
La Doncella - El Cid, Don Quijote, Don Juan
La Traidora - La traicion de la amistad, Gatomaquia
La "Doña/Don Juana" - El otro lado de la cama
Teaching Implications / Unit Activities:
1) Examine the image of the Doncella in El Cid, Don Quijote and Don Juan. What are the main characteristics of a woman that were deemed desirable in this time period?
2) Compare La Traicion de la amistad and Gatomaquia. What plot similarities have you found? What differences are there? How has the image of the woman changed from the Doncella present in the texts we have already studied?
3) Watch "El otro lado de la cama" (2006). How has the role and the image of the woman changed from the literature we first studied in the course? What elements of Spanish popular culture are present in this film?

Ensayo y curriculum
Hoy en día, los donjuanes están en sequía
It's hard being a Don Juan these days. Gone are the days of doncellas; damsels in distress who rely solely on the strength of their caballeros andantes to get them through their darkest hours. And gone are the days that Don Juans can go around spreading their love to all the damsels without the fear that the damsels will turn around and start spreading their own love all around town. The contemporary Spanish woman gives Don Juan a run for his money, now equalling his prowess in strength, adventure, deception and promiscuity. The classic gender roles established in the great works of Spanish literature have undergone a nearly one-hundred-eighty-degree rotation over the past several hundred years, and this progression can be clearly identified in the chronological examination of period works of Spanish literature as well as contemporary works and trends in Spanish popular culture.
In studying the great works of Spanish literature and popular culture over the past millennium, we will examine how the role of the woman has changed drastically in Spain, and how this shift has ultimately affected the role of the man in modern Spanish society. To this end, we will investigate the image of the doncella in the works of El Cid, Don Quixote, and Don Juan, the shift to traidorain La traición en la amistdad and La Gatomaquia, and the development into the modern-day “doñajuana” in the contemporary Spanish films Verde doncella and El otro lado de la cama. While the literary progression of these shifts in gender roles are presented, pedagogical implications and instructions will be also put forth in the context of creating a curriculum and syllabus for a rigorous graduate-level Spanish literature and popular culture course with a focus on cultural gender studies. This suggested curriculum is best suited for diligent, open-minded graduate students versed in the humanities due to the nature of the content of the course. As many materials will be presented in the pedagogical section, it is important to keep in mind that this is only a pedagogical guideline, and that liberties can and should be taken to adapt the curriculum materials to suit the needs and time constraints of any particular class.
From doncella to “doñajuana”: the literary metamorphosis of the Spanish woman
Part 1: roles of la doncella, el caballero y el donjuán in El Cid, Don Quixote, y Don Juan
The earliest accounts of Spanish literature (from the eleventh century onwards) portray the role of the protagonist woman as a submissive, virginal damsel in distress: a doncella. The image of the doncella can be readily perceived in the leading female characters of Spain's literary classics: Ximena in the epic El Cid, Dulcinea in Cervante's Don Quixote, and the many lovers in the numerous portrayals of Don Juan. The image of the woman as a one-dimensional, dependent creature has a direct impact on the role of the caballero andante or donjuán: the men have the advantage of being completely in control, and the women are their supporting characters.
These three works can be studied together (in chronological order, from El Cid to Don Quixote to Don Juan) in a class in the first part of the semester. As it is only a semester-long course, there is irrefutably not enough time or energy to be devoted to reading any of these texts in its entirety. Rather, the professor must carefully select passages from these literary works that highlight the role of the doncella and the relationship she has with her caballero or her donjuán (Vogely 1997). A quick lesson on the historical and literary context as well as a synopsis must also be presented before delving into specific passages in each of these works, in order to aid the students gain a broad, concrete understanding of Spain and the Spaniards over the course of the second millennium (Vogely 1997). To visually supplement each of these works to give them a more tangible relevance to our students (and also to quickly set the scene for each of these works since none are studied in depth for more than two weeks at a time), the use of films can be employed in class. El Cid (1961), Don Quixote (2000) and Don Juan deMarco (1994) are the recommended films for the first part of the semester. Please refer to the suggested syllabus (below) for an idea of when and how to implement these films in class.
Part 2: a shift in roles: traidores y traidoras in La traición en la amistad y La Gatomaquia
Seventh century Spanish literature sees a shift in the portrayal of the women from doncella to traidora. No longer a submissive, one-dimensional character, the Spanish woman is now presented as a being who is capable of fending herself. Not only can the seventeenth century Spanish female hold her own; she is also capable of deceiving men and serving her own devices. The shift from doncella to traidora can by bountifully observed in the examination of the plays La traición de la amistad and La Gatomaquia.
The second half of the semester can begin with highlighting this shift from doncella to traidora, first starting with La traición de la amistad and then later with La Gatomaquia. As within the first part of the semester, great care must be taken on the part of the professor to first introduce each play in its historical and literary context in seventeenth century Spain, and then to pick meaningful passages that readily portray women as more than a one-dimension characters, and their relationships with the men their lives (Vogely 1997). To visually supplement these plays, it is recommended to show short excerpts of each of these plays (both found on YouTube) to establish an immediate understanding of the contextualized framework and story of each play. Please refer to the suggested syllabus (below) for ideas on how and when to integrate these YouTube clips into the class.
Part 3: the modern-day “doñajuana” in Verde doncella y El otro lado de la cama
Moving into modern-day Spain, the image of a much ballsier, much more promiscuous mujer española is now often portrayed. In this third and final section of the class (recommended second half of the second part of the semester), this portrayal of the contemporary “doñajuana” can be studied in viewing the films Verde doncella (1968) and El otro lado de la cama (2002). Both films shot in Madrid, directed by Spanish directors, and portrayed by Spanish actors speaking (por supuesto) entirely en español, these two films offer invaluable first-hand insight into the language and culture of contemporary Spain. Elements of Spanish popular culture as portrayed in these two films should be discussed in the course of their viewing (Dobrian 1993). An explicit analysis of how the role of the woman has changed and developed from eleventh century Spain to twenty-first century Spain – as well as how the change in the role of the woman has influenced the role of the man – must also be addressed upon viewing these films, in order to bring the theme of the recommended curriculum to its fruition. Please refer to the suggested syllabus for instructions on how to synthesize these films in the context of the theme of the class.
Pedagogical Considerations and Further Instructions
First and foremost, one must bear in mind that this is designed to be a Spanish language course as well as a literature and popular culture course, and that gender roles in Spanish literature and pop culture is the contextualized content around which the linguistic component should be based. As a graduate-level university Spanish course, the curriculum should incorporate a substantial amount of target language input (i.e. readings, films and professor-guided seminars in Spanish) as well as require a demanding level of target language output (i.e. class discussions, presentations and compositions in Spanish). The lexical input will undoubtedly be contextualized by the specificity and related themes in the readings (the students will become very familiar with words such as doncella, caballero andante, traición, engañanza, and the like) but this constant repetition of lexicon will ultimately serve the students well in the development and augmentation of their second language vocabulary. The following section outlines a guideline for a potential syllabus that could be adapted and developed for an graduate-level university Spanish class. It is designed with the traditional scholastic semester (about four months) in mind, and the content load should be modified if being considered for a trimester, summer, or winter term course. The suggested order of the presentation of literary texts and contemporary works in the classroom mirrors the order in which they were presented above.
